Intake Steps

Are you interested in the perinatal counselling we provide? This overview walks you through our intake process, step by step.

STEP 1

Talk to a Care Provider

Start by talking with a primary care provider in the Capital Regional District about whether a referral is right for you. It’s not needed, but we suggest you talk with a provider who knows you or one who specializes in care for new or expecting mothers and parents. Your care provider will need our referral form to review your circumstances against our eligibility criteria. If you do not have access to a care provider, speak with a public health nurse.

STEP 1

STEP 2

CARE PROVIDER SENDS REFERRAL

If your care provider finds that you are eligible for referral, they will fill out our referral form and fax it to us. If you are not eligible for program-funded services but feel that you need professional counselling support, the referrer you’ve had some time to think it over, I’ll reach out to you to see if you are ready to commit to the program. For parents who are not eligible, consider a private counselling option and other perinatal resources we put together.

STEP 2

STEP 3

We call to book first session

Almost as soon as we get a referral, our Intake Manager (Dayna) will call you to schedule a first counselling sessions with one of our perinatal counsellors. Depending on what is best for you, the session will be in person or online with a video service such as Zoom.

Dayna will answer questions you have, check to see if assistance is needed to get to counselling, and schedule an appointment with one of our perinatal counsellors if you want to proceed. All first appointments are scheduled by telephone.

After your first session is scheduled, all or most of your contact with the program will be with your perinatal counsellor. Should something come up where you need additional assistance, you are welcome to call Dayna to discuss.

STEP 3

STEP 4

CONSENT TO COUNSELLING

Soon after you schedule your first appointment, you will get a pre-appointment email that asks you to complete a consent form online to confirm that you consent to receive counselling.

Please review and complete the online form as soon as you can. If you do not complete it before your appointment, or if you have concerns or questions, you and your counsellor can discuss them at your first session.

STEP 4

STEP 5

MEET YOUR COUNSELLOR

Counselling begins with your first session, either as an individual or as a couple. Early in the session, you and your counsellor will begin to explore the issues you are facing, and your hopes and goals that are linked to those issues.
